The Rant keeps trucking along, and this week, we had Tina Smith and Kim Pritt from Communities in Schools in the studio to talk school.

This is what else you got …
• A possible cuss slip by Jon at the very beginning (can you catch it?)
• Democratic convention talk
• More phone problems
• Local headlines: Broadway festival, downtown renovations on Chatham Street, Senior Idol
• Jon incurring the wrath of city officials and school officials
• Billy incurring the wrath of senior citizens
• We see if Communities in Schools is smarter than Jonathan Owens

This week, we invited the two most powerful men in Lee County education — outgoing Central Carolina Community College President Matt Garrett and incoming president “Bud” Marchant — into our studio to show them we deserved a show on their campus.
And you know what? We think it was a success.

In addition to a pretty good interview … other highlights included:
• Jon revealing he loves female gymnasts
• Naming things after living people talk
• The smoking ban that never was in Lee County buildings

And much, much, much more.
Enjoy!

It was an historic week for The Rant and for WDCC FM, as for the first time, we took on-the-air phone calls through a new system. While the phones weren’t exactly “ringing off the hook” (where were ya, listeners?) … we did get a few calls.

We want to thank our guest this week: Jay Calendine, chairman of the Lee County Young Republicans. To learn more about the Young Republicans in our county, go to their Facebook Web site located here or e-mail leecountyyr@gmail.com

FOR FUTURE SHOWS: Call us to get on the air at 718-7382.

Topics this week included:
• The John Edwards affair
• Golfing at Pinehurst No. 2
• Phone Calls!
• The new look of The Herald
• Political chat with Jay Calendine

Sorry for the lateness with the podcast, but here is Week 8 … The Rant’s first-ever guest-less show and, you know what, possibly our strongest show to date (note to guests … start carrying your weight).

We DID have few problems … both of them had to do with recording.
FIRST — the first 8 minutes of The Rant did not get recorded on the Podcast because of one of those crazy computer issues. To make up for it, we added 5 minutes to the end of the show … so you got your full hour, podcast listeners.
SECOND — Twice we play music on the show today, and while it appeared on the air, it doesn’t show up on the podcast. Sorry. It doesn’t take away too much, but it’s a small mistake, nonetheless.
We’ll get it fixed … and next week, we start taking phone calls (hopefully).

Oh, and by popular demand:
The Missouri Compromise was an agreement passed in 1820 between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the United States Congress, involving primarily the regulation of slavery in the western territories. It prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36°30′ north except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri. Prior to the agreement, the House of Representatives had refused to accept this compromise and a conference committee was appointed. The United States Senate refused to concur in the amendment, and the whole measure was lost.
